This 6-day trek is ideal for climbers seeking a scenic yet challenging route to the Roof of Africa. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and incredible views, providing an enriching and fulfilling climbing experience.
Begin the day with a hearty breakfast and transfer to the Machame Gate (1,800m). After completing registration formalities, start your ascent through a lush rainforest. This 6-7 hour trek offers a chance to spot unique flora and fauna while climbing to Machame Camp (3,000m), where you'll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay under the stars.
Leave the rainforest and ascend into a heather and moorland zone, surrounded by stunning vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro’s towering peaks. This moderate hike takes approximately 5-6 hours, leading you to Shira Camp (3,840m), where you’ll rest and acclimatize in preparation for higher altitudes.
This is an acclimatization day designed to help your body adapt to the altitude. Climb from Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, where you may feel the effects of high altitude. Afterward, descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), located in a scenic valley at the base of the imposing Barranco Wall. This trek takes about 7-8 hours and enhances acclimatization for the days ahead.
Start the day with a challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through alpine desert terrain to Karanga Camp for lunch. Continue the ascent to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The trek spans 7-8 hours, and an early dinner is followed by rest as you prepare for a midnight summit push.
Wake at midnight and begin your summit attempt under the starlit sky. The challenging trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, takes 6-7 hours. Witness a breathtaking sunrise at the summit before descending to Barafu Camp for a short break. Afterward, continue descending to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.
