The brochure presents Marangu as a gradual six-day route and Kilimanjaro’s only hut-based climb, passing through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert.
Day by day
- Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut — Register at Marangu Gate (1,860m) and hike for four to five hours through rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,720m).
- Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut — Trek for six to eight hours into the moorland with views of Mawenzi and Kibo, reaching Horombo Hut (3,720m).
- Acclimatisation at Horombo Hut — Hike toward Mawenzi Ridge (4,310m) to adjust to the altitude, then return to Horombo Hut.
- Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut — Cross alpine desert for six to eight hours to Kibo Hut (4,703m), eat an early dinner and rest.
- Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut — Climb at midnight via Gilman’s Point (5,685m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend via Kibo to Horombo Hut.
- Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Descend for five to six hours through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m), receive your certificate and return to Moshi.
