From the savannah to the sea: adding Zanzibar to your safari
After dusty game drives, a few days on Zanzibar's white beaches is the perfect way to end your trip. Here is what to expect.
Many of our travellers finish their Tanzania journey on Zanzibar. A short domestic flight takes you from the northern safari parks to the island, so you can go from watching lions in the morning to walking on the beach by the afternoon.
Stone Town and the Spice Island
Stone Town, the island's historic heart, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow streets, carved wooden doors and busy markets tell the story of centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean. A guided walk is the best way to discover it.
Zanzibar is also known as the Spice Island. On a spice farm tour you can see, smell and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla straight from the plants.
Beaches and the ocean
White sand and clear, shallow water.
The beaches in the north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, are popular for swimming because the tide changes less there than on the east coast. On the east and south coasts you will find quieter stretches of sand, coral reefs and traditional fishing villages.
You can fill your days with snorkelling, a sunset dhow cruise or a visit to Jozani Forest to meet the rare red colobus monkeys, or simply do nothing at all.
